High-Rise Signs, Hard-to-Reach Locations
Some Cracker Barrel signs reach heights of 175 feet. Servicing those signs takes more than a routine visit: it requires specialized equipment and coordination to reach the sign faces and lighting components.
Many locations are in rural areas where suitable cranes can be difficult to secure. The original program faced extended maintenance timelines and higher costs when equipment was scarce. For the facilities department, each service need also created a coordination task involving the sign, the location and the equipment needed to access it.
The challenge was to maintain these highly visible signs through a more consistent service arrangement while reducing the administrative burden on the restaurant team.
THE SOLUTION
One Coordinated Maintenance Program
Cracker Barrel established a fixed-rate agreement with Federal Heath to organize high-rise sign maintenance. The documented scope includes comprehensive re-lamping and thorough cleaning of sign faces at the start of the maintenance program or once during a 36-month term.
Bringing these activities into an agreed program gives the facilities team a defined framework for caring for the signs. Re-lamping addresses the illumination that makes the identification visible, while cleaning helps maintain the appearance of the sign faces.
Federal Heath also manages crane coordination, taking that responsibility off Cracker Barrel’s facilities department. The original case study describes repairs being addressed within 48 to 72 hours when necessary; that timing reflects the documented program rather than a service guarantee for every future project.
THE RESULT
Greater Clarity for Facilities Teams
The fixed-rate arrangement gave Cracker Barrel greater clarity about annual sign repair costs and helped keep its identification signs serving their intended purpose: making locations visible to customers. The program combined a predictable cost structure with coordinated access to signs that can be challenging to service.
